The new Perth City Shopping Centre has been officially opened on Saturday.
Perth City Council’s Chief Executive, Mark Jones, said the $15 million development, which will include a supermarket and a coffee shop, is a huge boost to the local economy.
“It’s really going to transform the way people live in Perth,” Mr Jones said.
The retail centre will be the city’s first and only high-end shopping centre.
He said the site was also a place where people can buy more locally, like the new boutique cafe on the ground floor.
“This is a really exciting moment for the city and I think the city is really on a journey to become a much more vibrant, vibrant place,” Mr Smith said.
Mr Jones said the project was being developed as part of the citywide plan to increase density in the CBD.
“Perth is a very densely populated city, and it’s a really congested city and that’s where we want to see the retail centre really be able to operate in the future,” he said.
The mall will be located at the northern end of the central business district, and will be designed by the architectural firm of Wollongong, which is working with local architects.
The site has been earmarked as a hub for shopping and leisure, and the centre will have a total of eight shopping centres across five sites.
The council has been awarded a $10 million contract to build the shopping centre, and Mr Jones described the $5 million contract as “a huge success”.
“This project is a significant investment for Perth,” he added.
Construction of the retail area started in August and is expected to be completed by 2021.
